Why Rest is Productive
Me: Resting is productive! Everybody should rest!
You: Karli, what does rest have to do with taking my next career step?
Here is what I know to be true:
📣If you don’t define what necessary rest looks like for you now, you will continue to burnout no matter how aligned you are with your next role, company, and industry.📣
Take a walk with me… 🚶♀️
I get asked about work boundaries a lot. (So much so that I wrote an article about it, linked in comments). There are a lot of ways to set boundaries to decrease burnout like actually taking time off, reducing meetings, and setting work hours.
But…
🤨How do you know how many meetings you can handle if you’re constantly forcing yourself to push through?
🤨Do you know how much time off it would take for you to come back to work feeling reenergized?
🤨Are you actually most productive in the morning or is your anxiety sky high when you wake up, because you run out of steam in the afternoon?
By learning what is required for YOU to feel rested, you will have a clear picture of how to structure your work week to accommodate taking care of yourself. And that structure can inform what you’re looking for in your next role.
👉🏻 If you prefer a lot of independent work, you may want to look for a company that relies on documentation and async feedback.
👉🏻 If you find that you work best in the evenings and prefer meetings in the mornings, you may look for a company with a global team that allows flexible hours.
👉🏻 If you have a hard time taking your PTO but know it’s necessary, you may look for a company with mandatory minimum day offs.
Again: 📣If you don’t define what necessary rest looks like for you now, you will continue to burnout no matter how aligned you are with your next role, company, and industry.📣
