Career Challenges for Marketers
Thanks to everyone that's taken my career challenges for marketers survey. I'm seeing some really interesting trends, so I thought I'd share some.
What are marketers struggling with the most?
π¬ 61.5% of survey respondents said they're feeling overwhelmed or burnt out
π¬ 48.7% said they didn't feel like they were getting what they need or deserve from leadership
(This was a multi-select question. Promise i'm not that bad at math).
For managers and leadership, this probably isn't what you want to see as you go into the new year. As budgets have been cut and lay-offs have divided teams, a lot of marketers are feeling like they need help and that they're not getting it.
I saw comments like:
- "Doing more with less" means that I'm spread too thin and taking on too many different jobs at once
- I feel like there's no place for me to grow to in my current role and I feel stuck. Need to figure out where I can grow and where I can feel fulfilled.
- Budget cuts, lack of promotion and equity paths, and not adjusting goals as attrition continues to rise
This isn't great news for managers, but you can still turn things around:
π As you're planning your kick-offs and mapping out goals for next year, if "boosting morale" isn't on them, I think you can expect to see some departures.
π Don't just ask how you can help. Be involved in your team's workload enough to be able to pick something up and run with it.
π Advocate for your team to execs and leadership. Quantify how recent changes are impacting your team and their ability to drive results.
π Shameless plug: offer career coaching as part of your employee benefits. Whether it's a group session at your KO, or one-on-one sessions with the team, showing that you're investing in their future can help your team feel like there's a path for them.
And for marketers struggling with the above:
π Take as much time for yourself as you can over the next month. It can wait!
π Communicate how your performance is being impacted to your manager and ask to help with a solution. (Don't feel like that's possible? Then maybe this isn't the place for you).
π Write out what it would look like for you to be successful AND rested in your current role. Then ask yourself and your manager: is this possible here?
π Tag your manager below (lol jk probably don't do that)
Times are tough, but that doesn't mean you have to suffer!
I'll be sharing more results from that survey as responses continue to come in. See link in comments if you'd like to participate.
